somewhere between Great and good
I bought these headphones few weeks ago, and I am satisfied with the sound, especially high. I listen to New Age music, usually maksim mrvica's. But when I directly connect it to my laptop, the sound sometimes are just gone, when the head?part of the cord is bend about 90 degree. I don't know if it is a normal, but mine does. (I used the gold adapter to put it directly to y laptop) perhaps it is the weight? Also, honestly these headphones are not the most comfortable headphones out there. It pushes my JAWS...; I should admit that my chin is not so strong, but it does make me uncomfortable.

Once run in Wow to the 701
I got my 701's and after a good while running in they have really come on song.
At first I found the bass a bit odd but that has really gone and it is deep and rich but very accurate. It is the mid and high clarity that I love. They are a good mix of clarity and verve. There is an excellent 'liveness' to the music that I find essential. My main system uses horn speakers with compression drivers that are very distortion free and so not fatiguing at all. I find the 701's similar in some aspects. Very revealing and not tiring to listen to. I use a good quality modified SS head phone amp.
I don't find them uncomfortable and in fact I find them more comfortable than some other top brands. They sit snuggly too. I like the single left side cord and proper 1/4" jack with adapter for portable gear. They sound great on my Nokia N8 too.
I have owned many other brands of phones from £200 upwards & I prefer what the 701's do overall - praise indeed.

701 - new or re-packaged?
How to tell if it's 100% new?Box is shrink wrapped, flap is Velcro, but inside, the only component wrapped in plastic bag is the cord, not the ear-cups.

Great sound, uncomfortable headband
Excelent sound quality. The greatest difference in sound is felt when listening to other headphones afterwards - they always seem to be missing something. Just natural and clean sound. Suddenly you can hear so much more detail in each and every piece of music you listen to.
One significant cone though. The leather headband makes my head ache a bit after about 1 hour of use. It was not a problem before i cut my hair, so i suppose with long hair it is not an issue, short hair - headphones get a bit uncomfortable. I suppose these headphones ar best for some sort of crazy hippie-audiophiles with long hear (and old VW minibus preferably). Or female audiophiles (if there are any).
Anyway, the sound quality is excelent and i hope that the leather headband will wear in, otherwise i will have to come up with some inovative revolutionary headband-megasoftening-idea.

Great! But.
I have had my k701's for almost two years, best quality by far, but I find myself noticing lower quality encoding on music A lot more, I just wish more people would step up for good quality~
And I have experienced my left speaker go out before I had it for a year, and then earlier today the right one went out, When the left one went out I stopped using them depressed for a few months but I tried them randomly one day and it was working again, and the right one was out for 2 hours, I took the silver grate off and fiddled with the white wire and tada.. even with the inconvenience I still love these

They're called Reference Class for a reason!
Much of what you have heard or read about the K701 is true: they ARE shrill and wild, they ARE somewhat bass-lean, and they ARE uncomfortable after a while thanks to the bumped headband... at first.
But these were merely temporary inconveniences. After several hundred hours, the shrill top end began to relax and tame itself, while the low-end movement loosened up to become deeper and more wholesome. I realised that "burn-in" was going to be a necessity with the K701, but I just didn't realise how well it improves the sound. After about 1000 hours of bass-heavy music and test tracks, the sound was so much more free and refined, truly astonishing.
The bumped headband, even after years of use, is still not 100% comfortable. It certainly doesn't deliver the agonising pain that it did during the first few months, but it still bewilders me why the bumps were chosen. The rest of the design is an ergonomic masterpiece, so the bumps on the headband pressing down on the skull unfortunately force me to award 4 out of 5 stars.
The K701 really sounds a lot better amped. At first, I listened to them from the headphone socket of my Class A stereo speaker amplifier, and they were good. I tried them plugged into the headphone amp of a PC soundcard, and they sounded great. I built a customised Class A solid-state headphone amp, and they sounded breathtaking.
Since then, I have recabled my K701 to dual-entry, using starquad silver/OFC cable, and feel I have reached my own personal auditory heaven. My cousin, who works for an ultra-high-end audiophile manufacturer/modification company, had his opinion of headphones changed forever when I brought my K701 and amp around for a listening audition.
I have several other headphones, each for different usage, but I feel that the K701 is definitely one that you should consider if you are searching for the ultimate home-listening headphone experience. They're called Reference Class for a reason!

Top Shelf Cans!
I purchased these about two months ago and love them! They do take some time to burn in. I played some music and a lot of pink noise for 300+ hrs. I didn't like the sound out of the box but noticed a huge difference after 200 hrs of burn in. I went over 300 hrs. and I'm very happy.
I have used these with a headphone amp out of my computer and ipod and they sound ok. The reason I purchase the 701's was to use them with my home system. My super clean Hitachi amp has no problem driving these cans.
The K701's have a very wide soundstage that allows you to hear everything! You will hear things, good and bad, in your music that you have never heard before. If the recording is bad, these cans will expose it. The wide soundstage makes the room sound very large and gives depth to the instruments and vocals that I have never hear before. It does take some time to get used to since most cans have a much smaller soundstage and the instrument sound very close together. I read some reviews on the net that these headphones lack bass. Not true. If the recording you are listending to doesn't have a lot of bass, these will not color it and add it. They are neutral. The bass is warm and deep when it is in the recording. The highs and mids are very good too!
I have no problem with the comfort. The pads are very soft and I have no problem with the headband. Some people complain about the bumps on the bottom of the pad. I am sensitve to things like this and they do not bother me. They sit on your head very nice with out squeezing!
One thing I would like is a case. At this price point, one should be included. I don't plan on taking them anywhere, but I do want to keep the dust off them. I did find a nice wooden box I had at home that I am going to pad. I've printed a vinyl sticker of the phones with the model number to put on the cover.
The value you get with here is off the chart. They are very well priced for what you get. You can spend more money on other headphones, but I'm not sure why you would. I listend to a lot of top end headhpones from all the top manufacturers before I purchased the K701's. These sound like $10,000 speakers on your head.
Buy thes cans, burn them in and enjoy!

most natural sound, detailed and enough bass
I really impressive with the AKG sound, my first pair of headphone was AKG k141... excellent sound but when I bought an AKG K701... AKG really change of sound.. much 3D sound, more headroom, airness, detailed, enough bass impact (more than other models)
Ideal for classical music, classical rock, JAZZ, and very well mastered sounds... In the world of portable media players may produce a good sound but not enough.. need an amplifier for headphones
The AKG sound are defined in my opinion as DETAILED, crisp, neutral sound, good but not prominet bass (like the natural world not in the disco), really enjoyable with many genres of music, perfect for home listeners (with amplifiers, recievers), adecuate for vinyl listeners or Digital good mastered recordings... Always find a detail that never listen in old recordings that previous listen with other headphones (AKG pre-varimotion drivers and other brands).
For the price is the best option for audiophile listener, jazz and classical music.
The only bad thing in this beauty headphones is the "bumps o pads" in the headband is a bit inconfortable for large periods of time (2 hs or more).

Best sound for the money
I have to say these are the best phones I ever owned. The sound is astonishing and they are really comfortable over long periods. Some may dislike Circumaural phones on those hot summer days but I haven't had any problem with them. I wear glasses and the 3D foam ear pieces make them really comfy since there is some kind of space to let the frame through. The only issue I have is that the little plastic guide that align the headband on top of the head broke after about one year of use, ~4h/day

One of the great headphones!!
I had owned Hd650 and DT880 before I bought K701, actually, I never expect K701 to be so excellent. Compare to HD650, its price is just wonderful. The HQ sound really punched me, esp, the soft female voice! And the tune of the songs sounds warmer than DT880's. Beside the sound quality, its design is also very good. White is the colorful impression K701 gives us. Very pure and moving. I promise that everyone who owned K701 will love it. In spite of the good-look outward appearance, K701 is very comfortable, too. When you are listening some songs that full of bass, you just feel nothing on your head.

Excellent sound for such an excellent price!
I actually have the brother to the K701, the K702. I purchased this headphone for a few reasons. I've just started getting more involved in Headphone listening and have heard these were one of the headphones to get. I purchased them and have thoroughly enjoyed their sound signature. They're very comfortable and are one of those rare headphones that sound good out of the box, but the better equipment you pair them with... the better they get. I see these as not a headphone that I've purchased, but as an experience that I've invested in (as I will not be parting with these, but enjoying the hobby while trying to get the best sound out of these that I can).
The detail and not separation on these headphones are fantastic! I've put them against other headphones from big name companies and all decent headphones shine in one area or another. These though, shine with Solid State Amping, Tube Amping and straight out of my computer (though they don't sound their best that way). The highs are crystal clear, mids are nice a present, and with all the bass shyness I've been hearing... I didn't expect much there... but I was wrong. They have good bass, not sloppy bass that uses an excess amount. These use the proper amount and sound fantastic while doing it.

The Audiophile Headphone Benchmark
Having my received my K701 last October, I have had ample time to listen and enjoy my new AKG product.
I purchased the K701 as it won high praise in the audiophile community around the internet. The major selling points to me were its liquid smooth sound, vast soundstage, comfort and workmanship.
I have been using my K701 with a entry level computer sound card and have been playing a mixture of FLAC loseless files and 320KBs MP3s. Despite this fundamentally flawed audiophile setup (no proper DAC/Headphone AMP and artificial sound effects placed into the music with the soundcard) the K701 instantaneously impressed me with its "mellow" sound characteristics and expansive soundstage. As time passed, the lower end of the sound scale filled-in and the sound became even more relaxed. It is undisputable to anyone who listens to the K701, that it is indeed a magnificent sounding headphone. Soon I plan to purchase a quality headphone amp and a proper DAC, I will at such time, post a more indept review into the sound characteristics of the K701.
Adressing comfort, the K701 is eaisly the most comfortable circum-aural can I have worn to date. The K701 eaisly fits onto my larger than average sized head and is comfortable to wear for extended periods. I also find that my ears do not get sweaty as they do with other headphones. The self adjusting headphone strap works very well, and even though the mechanism itself does not look like the most rugid piece of equiptment, it has none-theless stood up to my harsh treatment thus far. The K701 is finished in materials that are resistant to minor bumps and falls and I find this very important in any high-use personal product. It should be noted that there are some minor pit falls with the K701s design - the colour of the product shows up dust and dirt eaisly, the velour ear pads attract animal hair and dust and are difficult to clean and the cable is unfortunately removable.. I should be noted that the K701s bigger professional brother (K702) adresses the problem with the removable cable and the colour, however the earpads of that product still attract dust and other airborne particles.
On many an internet forum, I have read that the sound of the K701 can be further improved by recabling it or having it modified to a Balanced configuration, however these practices do void the manufacturer warranty (at least to my understanding). The K702 can also be recabled, but because the headphone requires no internal modifications, this does not void the warranty.
Overall, the AKG K702 is an excellent product. Well priced, excellent sound quality and mind-boggling sound stage, comfort after extended use and excellent workmanship make this product a definite buy. I would give it 6 stars, but I'm limited to 5. Great work AKG, will recommend this to anyone.

Hear details you never heared before!
Amazing headphone. It reveals details I've never heard before in music. For instance, I have been listening to “Paperback Writer” probably 853 times before. But only the AKG K701 reveals some coughing after the couplet (twice), and a false start of John Lennon at a chorus (he is 4 bars off).
I amp these phones with the Matrix M-stage and Mini-i (dac), reasonable price, great quality. But even more expensive (per piece) than this headphone: great quality for few money.
Comfort while wearing is suburb. I wear theme easily multiple hours – bold-headed as I am. Only when its warmer outside, I listen less – because of being outside.
This isn't a headphone for your ipod/iphone. Though the 701's sound way better than the standard earbuds, even with the youngest ipod classic, a dedicated headphone amp make this star really shine.
Improvements? Just two I can think of, right now: While every part looks well designed, the chord seems cheap to me. Why not the same chord as the K530 LTD? Make them in black – I like black more

Example: Best Purchase Ever < True.
My review is very simple as i will be only mentioning the weak and strong points of the headphones, i'll be talking more about the headphones performance rather than the design of it but i must point out that i love the retro look of the K701/702, plus the genuine leather headband is a nice addition, the following notes that you'll see below is based from my point of view not only as a producer and audio engineering but also as a consumer (all the pros and cons are based on my opinions only).
Pros:
-Circumaural earpad size (reason why i mention this is because many circumaural headphones in the market still little bit too small for some people, well you dont need to worry about that with this model cause they have earpads the size of a cd). -Earpads are shaped perfectly to aim the drivers or speakers directly at your ears. -Outstanding sound quality. -Neutral sounding or flat frequency response. -Soundstage and instrument positioning. -Very Revealing (you will hear details that cant be heard in conventional headphones). -Self adjusting headband. -Comfortable fit for some people. -Reliability. -Lightweight. -Perfect for studio aplications (monitoring, mixing, mastering, etc). -Detachable cable [K702]. -Comes with a stand [K701] (might look silly but trust me you'll end up using it a lot).
Cons:
-Might be uncomfortable for people with big head. -Needs proper amplification (otherwise they will not perform as they were engineered and designed). -Very revealing (yes, some people might not like that). -Neutral sounding (yes also, many folks prefer a more colored or heavily equalized headphones). -Plastic housing (plastic is the best material for headphones cause it produces less resonance, but i think they should have used another material to make it more durable). -Comes only 1 cable and the standard velvet earpads [K702] (it would have been nice if they added the coiled cable and a set of leather earpads too) -Doesn't come with a stand [K702] -Doesn't come with a carrying case (the reason why its because wherever studio i go, i always take my headphones with me).

Audiophile Bliss at a Fraction of the Price
These headphones exceed even the most critical audiophiles' expectations. For the price you can't get a more crisp, accurate or detailed sound out of a headphone. It's a musical epiphany no matter what type of music you listen to. I found myself rediscovering my favourite tracks because each time I listened to them I'd hear a "new" part of the track I previously believed I had known inside-out. The soundstage is incredible, unlike anything I've ever experienced in a headphone.

AKG K 701 the superb headphone.
As music listener I appreciate natural and detailed sound. For many years I've listened all sort of headphones from companies like Sennheiser or Grado. By the far AKG K 701s are the best headphones I've heard.
AKG K 701s produce very natural and "rich" sound with its deep bass and crystal clear highs. Highs and bass are in great balance and like in some headphones bass isn't overwhelming or too weak but in great balance. That makes the the music feel very natural and real like the music composers meant the music to be heard. Wide soundstage makes music flow around your head.
Sound quality is not the only great part of these headphones but in the same time they are very stylish and comfortable to use. I can wear them easily thorought whole day. Large pads combined with quite light structure and perfect fit make the music even more enjoyable while listening. These headphones look amazing while packed with typical AKG build quality. Shiny metal, pure white and leather make these headphones very stylish.
In my opinion these headphones are really great for all kind of music with proper amplification and source. When looking to price tag they may seem cheap for a true HiFi headphones but always price isn't the value for musical experience.
I would highly recommend these headphones for anyone who have this passion for music. AKG truly knows how to make proper headphones!

Beautiful: Brilliant Sound and Exquisite Design
The ergonomics and comfort of the K 701 are outstanding. For me, the sound they produce come from brilliant engineering and I find that as the headphones age, surprisingly, the sound gets better. Keeping in mind the price range, these headphones are a wonderful addition to anyone who enjoys high quality headphones.

Great sound quality!
The AKG K 701 are reference headphones for a real audiophiles that are looking for a powerful bass and clear highs. In my opinion these headphones are ideal for home purposes. While listening to this set, songs you've heard before will be shown in new cover, more precise and more clear. Briefly about price. Hi-End quality is priceless !!!

The Jack of all Trade!
One of the most satisfying purchase I have ever made.
Sound quality: - Extreme details to the point that it would brutally murder any bad record. - Beautiful mids: I get eargasm when Celine Dion hits the high notes. - Lean but accurate bass. It doesn't go any lower than 70Hz so look somewhere else if you like filthy sub-bass. - Massive 3D soundstage. I can pin-point where the sound is coming from with these phones.
Design & Comfort: - Rated 4 stars because of the headband, the bumps really get on my nerve in long listening session. Replace it with K601 band would resolve the problem. - The undetachable cable would cause some difficulties compared to the K702 if re-cabling is desired. Otherwise, I have no other complain about the design.
Amplifying & Source: - These phones shine with a tube headphone amplifier. The warmth of the tube really adds more body to the sound. - Format your hard drive full of low quality mp3s and replace them with high quality mp3s and losslesses. As said above, these phones will highlight any flaw in your system and music.
Value: For £170 shipped, you cannot get more than this. However, look somewhere else if you want to take these phones to listen on-the-go. They're not designed for this purpose!
